Claremont Discourse: Embedded at Harvey Mudd College

Embedded at Harvey Mudd College:
An Anthropologist’s Ventures in Knowledge Making Practices

Wednesday, April 23, 4:15 PM
Honnold/Mudd Library • Founders Room
Marianne de Laet, Associate Professor of Anthropology and Science, Technology, and Society, Harvey Mudd College, and
Chair, Intercollegiate Program in the Study of Science, Technology and Society

What do an extra large ground-based astronomical observatory-in-the-making, a patent, a bottle of exquisite Burgundy wine, and a Harvey Mudd student have in common? As she reflects on the role anthropology can play in a science and engineering environment, Professor Marianne de Laet will connect these four objects of her own scholarly research and explore how her research and teaching have been informed and transformed by her curious constituency: engineers and scientists in-the-making; “subjects” and “objects” of her work. In a somewhat broader context, she will discuss Claremont’s unique Intercollegiate Program in STS.

$20 for Your Thoughts

The Libraries are investigating a variety of search products that may improve your research experience using library databases (such as JSTOR, PyscINFO, and the Blais catalog). We need your help in evaluating these products and will be conducting focus groups and usability tests in April, probably on Thursday, April 10, at 4pm and 7pm.

If you would be interested in participating in the evaluation process, please email Gale Burrow by Monday, April 7.

A limited number of participants will be selected from the volunteers. Participation will require not more than 2 hours of your time. As our thank you, we'll add $20 to each participant's Claremont Cash account.
